No. 1 Gators hosts track and field event to honor late coach



The Florida men's and women's track and field teams will be in action this weekend at the third Annual Tom Jones Memorial Classic, an even that honors the late Florida women's head coach.

The Gator men's team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest poll from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while the women's team is ranked No. 5. .

"Tom holds a very special place in my heart and in the hearts of anybody who was involved with the track and field programs while he was here, UF head coach Mike Holloway said. "We definitely want to make sure we put on a good show and have a great meet in Tom’s memory.”

Participating teams include Brown, Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville, Kentucky, Princeton, South Florida, UCF and UCLA (women). This will be UF’s final home meet of the 2010 season, and is the first time the Tom Jones Memorial Classic has been held outdoors. The first two meets were held inside the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
