For now, no depth chart for Florida Gators
As promised, Florida coach Will Muschamp and his staff spent much of Sunday haggling over which players will comprise the Gators' starters and which will be prominent contributors, but if you're looking for a full report on who'll be where, you'll have to wait awhile.
Muschamp said Monday morning he will not release a depth chart until Aug. 27 - the Monday of the Gators' season-opener against Bowling Green.
The focus for now is on special teams, and which players should get the most reps the remainder of the week in hopes of getting them more prepared to play, particularly young players.
This week's practice will include one final scrimmage.
While there is no depth chart, Muschamp did give some insight into some positions.
Sophomore CB Marcus Roberson will return punts and WR Andre Debose and RB Mike Gillislee will return kickoffs. Gillislee, Matt Jones, Mack Brown and Omarius Hines will all see playing time at TB. Lerentee McCray, Omar Hunter, Sharrif Floyd and Dominique Easley will start on the defensive line.
While some players try to secure playing time, others are battling injuries.
Freshman TE Colin Thompson will have surgery on Wednesday and is expected to have a screw inserted into his foot. He'll likely miss 6-8 weeks,, and probably will not play this season. Muschamp said Thompson's injury stems from a high school injury that did not heal properly. Freshman D.J. Humphries will miss 2-3 weks with a knee injury and freshman DB Marcus Maye's knee injury (meniscus) is also causing problems. Muschamp said Saturday he had been suffering from soreness and swelling in the knee. "
Right now it's not responding,'' Muschamp said.
Senior LB Lerentee McCray (hamstring) is expected to return for this week's scrimmage
OL Matt Patchan has a strained shoulder, but is not expected to miss playing time. I saw him riding his scooter on campus early Monday morning and he seemed fine. Palm Harbor alum Mike McNeely, a Gators special teams player, underwent surgery today, and OL Nick Alajajian's knee injury may not sideline him the entire season as originally expected. He could returne by mid-October, Muschamp said.
DL Sharrif Floyd (shoulder) remains in a non-contact jersey for now, and DE Ronald Powell (ACL) continues to slowly work his way back into practice, but there is no timetable for his return.
