OL Xavier Nixon among Gators nursing injuries
Sophomore OL Xavier Nixon injured his knee, and is expected to be further evaluated today. Florida coach Urban Meyer said Nixon could miss two weeks, but said Nixon's injury is "nothing major.’’
OL Matt Patchan (right wrist fracture) practiced on Monday, but has not been allowed contact yet. DT Brandon Antwine missed Saturday's scrimmage and Monday's practice due to a concussion, but is expected to return to practice Tuesday. Senior WR Deonte Thompson missed Saturday’s scrimmage with hamstring issues, but returned Monday.
Freshman WR Chris Dunkley has missed five practices with a chronic hamstring injury, but Meyer said he has returned to practice full speed. WR Justin Williams suffered a shoulder injury on Tuesday and will be evaluated on Tuesday.
In other practice notes:
Redshirt junior WR Chris Rainey will be the primary punt return man this season, and RB Jeff Demps will be primary on kickoffs, Meyer said. CB Janoris Jenkins and WR Frankie Hammond may also return punts. RB Michael Gillislee will also be on the return team, along with Burton as the lead guy, if he improves at handling the ball.
Meyer said much of the focus on the quarterback position is on the backups, a group that remains a work in progress. Trey Burton is seeing significant time as the wildcat quarterback, while Tyler Murphy is getting most of the reps with the second string. Jordan Reed, who has moved to TE, has also practiced with the wildcat formation.
