SEC To Be More Vigilant With Officials
HOOVER, Ala. - SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday the league will most likely begin more background checks on its football and basketball officials to ensure that the gambling scandal facing the NBA doesn't become a problem in the SEC.
Currently, background checks for football officials are done on a random basis by the NCAA for those wanting to work bowl games. The NCAA does mandatory checks on any basketball official that is applying to work the NCAA Tournament.
Slive will meet with football officials Thursday night, and said he will ''have a long chat with them.''
"A lot of the focus in the NCAA has been on gambling and student athletes,'' Slive said. "I think we need to make sure we’ve got a parallel program that is as intense for our officials as it is for the student athletes.''
