Tampa's Alex Panteliodis pitches complete game against Miami
Former Alonso standout Alex Panteliodis pitched his first complete game of the season, allowing just three hits and two runs to lead Florida to a 7-2 win over Miami in the first game of the best-of-three NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.
Panteliodis had had 12 strikeouts and retired the final 14 batters.
“It all started with Alex, he was outstanding,’’ UF coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “He moved the ball in and out all night long. . . I talked to him after the eighth and told him he needed to close it out so we could save our pen. And he did. He was outstanding.’’
Aided by Panteliodis’ (11-2) performance on the mound, Florida scored three runs in back-to-back innings to help seal the victory.
“I wanted to go out as long as I could for our team to have a chance,’’ Panteliodis said. “I had a little bit off-speed, then mainly fastballs after that. My team was behind me the whole time, they just kept talking to me. I was in it for them.’’
