Teryl Austin's status updated




UPDATE: Florida defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has been diagnosed with mild gastritis after being admitted to Tampa General Hospital on Monday suffering from abdominal pains.

The 45-year-old underwent a battery of tests before being diagnosed Tuesday night.

According to, gastritis is an inflammation, irritation, or erosion of the lining of the stomach, which can occur suddenly (acute) or gradually (chronic). 

Austin is in his first season with the Gators. He joined the staff after spending two seasons as the defensive backs coach with the Arizona Cardinals, but his coaching career spans 19 years. 

Since the announcement of Urban Meyer's resignation, Austin's named has been linked to the vacant defensive coordinator's position at Texas, but he is in Tampa this week with the rest of the Gators' staff preparing for Saturday's Outback Bowl against Penn State.
