Tests reveal Gators forward Erik Murphy has broken rib

Florida F Erik Murphy underwent tests on Monday that revealed he has a fractured rib on his left side. The team’s second-leading scorer (12.1 points per game), Murphy’s status for Wednesday’s SEC-opener against Georgia is not known.

Murphy injured his rib in the Dec. 29 game against Air Force – a game in which he scored 21 points. He suffered a hit in a subsequent practice and did not play in Sunday’s game against Yale.

Earlier Monday, Florida coach Billy Donovan said it was questionable whether Murphy would play.

"There is no difference really between a bruise and a break except the healing process,’’ Donovan said before the X-ray results were revealed. “He is cleared to play right now, but it is all up to him, how much pain he can tolerate.  He is not going to significantly hurt himself anymore because he’s going to be padded up and it’s not going to be a problem. But what happens is if he gets hit there or reaches and stretches it becomes so uncomfortable.''

If Murphy can't play, Florida (10-2) would go with a three-guard lineup with Scottie Wilbekin (8.2 points) moving into the starting spot.
