Urban Meyer apologizes to reporter, players come to Meyer's defense
Three days after his public confrontation with a reporter following a Florida spring practice, coach Urban Meyer offered a private apology.
Meyer met with Orlando Sentinel reporter Jeremy Fowler Saturday afternoon on the practice field following an early-morning practice - a conversation in which Fowler said an apology was extended and accepted. Meyer did not speak with other reporters.
On Friday, Florida players offered their unwavering support of their coach.
Asked on Friday if he liked the way Meyer defended teammate Deonte Thompson, who uttered a quote that Meyer felt was taken out of context in a story, senior OL Mike Pouncey said: “Oh yeah, of course. He’s got our back and we’ve got his.’’
Florida quarterback John Brantley said the fact that Meyer took a stand on behalf of Thompson sent a strong message to the players.
“Coach has our back,’’ Brantley said. “That’s what you want to see out of your coaches. We trust our coaches and they trust us, and that’s what we want to see.’’
