Urban Meyer to skip Penn State broadcast due to death of his father
Former Florida coach Urban Meyer will not work Saturday's broadcast of the Penn State vs. Nebraska game because of his father's death.
Urban "Bud" Meyer died today, according to ESPN officials. Meyer, who is now an analyst for the network, was scheduled to work the game in State College, Pa. on Saturday.
"Condolences to Urban Meyer and his family on the passing of his father Friday morning,'' ESPN said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with them. Urban will not be on ESPN this weekend.''
Meyer's name continues to come up as a replacement for Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who was fired this week in the wake of a scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. However, Meyer, who was mentioned as a strong possible replacement even before Paterno was fired, has said he is not planning to return to coaching in the near future.
"I am very happy with my role at ESPN,'' Meyer said in a statement released Friday due to the persistent rumors that he would replace Paterno. "I have no plans to return to coaching at this time.''
