Will Muschamp says Jeff Driskel has earned backup quarterback role - for now

With a little over two weeks remaining before the season begins, freshman QB Jeff Driskel has taken over the role as the Gators' backup quarterback - at least for now.

Driskel had an impressive performance in Florida's scrimmage Monday, UF coach Will Muschamp said.

"Jeff has kind of distanced himself right now to be the backup quarterback,'' Muschamp said Tuesday morning.  "He played well in the scrimmage, has good command of the offense, and again I say at this point. Charlie (Weis) and I sat Jeff down and said at this point you’ve earned this opportunity. But you’re a day or two away from those other guys gaining on you because Tyler (Murphy) and Jacoby (Brissett) have done nothing to disappoint us. They are both outstanding and really coming along well. Jacoby had probably his best day playing in the scrimmage. He’s starting to get a better feel for the offense, he’s extremely intelligent and he’s done a nice job.''

Driskel threw for 4,844 yards at Hagerty High in Oviedo and was rated the No. 1 quarterback in the nation by both and

Muschamp said senior John Brantley remains the clear starter.
