ESPN: Lane Kiffin hired as FAU's next coach

Lane Kiffin will be a head coach in Florida after all.

Alabama's offensive coordinator is set to take over Florida Atlantic, ESPN reported Monday morning.

Kiffin has previously been the head coach at Tennessee and USC, and with the NFL's Oakland Raiders. His name was mentioned as a potential candidate at USF, which hired Charlie Strong over the weekend.
Kiffin is the latest high-profile coaching hire in the state, joining Strong and Florida International's Butch Davis this offseason.

It'll be interesting to see how long Kiffin stays with the Owls, and what the hire means for local recruiting. FAU typically has a large presence in the Tampa Bay area; Hillsborough High product Azeez Al-Shaair has been one of the conference's most productive defensive players there, and at least seven other players are from Pinellas or Hillsborough.

I wrote last week about why Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban believes Kiffin is ready to be a head coach again.

Kiffin previously told reporters that he planned to stay with 'Bama through the end of the season - which will likely mean a trip to Tampa for the Jan. 9 national championship at Raymond James Stadium. The No. 1 Tide plays Washington in a semifinal at the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31.
