Florida Gators open to more marquee opening-weekend games

DESTIN - The Florida Gators have two marquee football opening-weekend games coming up. They play Michigan in 2017 in Arlington, Texas and will play Miami in Orlando in 2019.

Those type of opponents won't be fixtures on the schedule, but they might come up again, athletic director Jeremy Foley said.

"It depends on the opportunity," Foley said Wednesday at the SEC's spring meetings.

UF wants to play seven home games, and the community wants seven home games, Foley said. But some opportunities are too enticing because of finances, recruiting or fan interest to pass up.

"We're not going to do that every year," Foley said. "But we have one in '17, we have one in '19. If we have one in '21 or '22, I'd be in favor of that. But we have to be presented with an opportunity, and we have not had one."
