Former Wharton star Vernon Hargreaves III makes early impact for Gators
When former Wharton standout Vernon Hargreaves III intercepted a pass from Toledo QB Terrance Owens late in the third quarter and returned it 15 yards, not a single Florida player or coach was surprised.
The Gators have said all preseason that Hargreaves was a special player, and they fully anticipated he would quickly make an impact.
“When we meet as a staff and we go into any game, especially the first game, we talk in terms of who are the guys we know we are going to play regardless and he was one of those guys defensively,” Florida coach Will Muschamp said. “There was going to be no conversation about putting him in the game. There was no conversation. . . Vernon’s a really good player."
Hargreaves, a freshman, was one of several newcomers making an impact in Saturday’s game due to the loss of several players to suspension.
“We’re very happy for him,” senior cornerback Jaylen Watkins said. “We lost some guys last year and we need those kind of guys to come in and step up. We look forward to it, and embrace them. He really did exactly what we asked him today.”
The Florida veteran players said they welcome the adddition - and contributions - of the younger players.
'It’s great to see those guys make plays,' junior LB Ronald Powell said. "Like the interception from Hargreaves, that’s great man. It’s great production."
