Gators need backup QB to emerge in fall camp
If freshman QB Will Grier is the heir apparent to Jeff Driskel, you can't tell it from Gators coach Will Muschamp.
At least not yet.
Grier will required to compete with backup Skyler Mornhinweg in fall camp for the chance to win the job outright.
Mornhinweg started the final three games of the 2013 season after starter Jeff Driskel and backup Tyler Murphy each were sidelined with injuries. So although the offense is new, he does have collegiate experience.
"We've got to get another guy ready to play, and that's what we plan on doing," Muschamp said. "Who that will be, I don't know."
Muschamp said the staff's plan is to have a backup QB ready to play in the Gators' season opener against Idaho on Aug. 30.
"We need to find a backup quarterback that will play in the first game at some point," Muschamp said. "It's important for us to develop that position. We'll decide (which backup) when we get through training camp."
