Injuries take emotional toll on Gators

18

October

Within the past month, the Florida Gators have lost three starters to season-ending injuries and seven have suffered season ending injuries since preseason began in August.

"I’ve never been on a team with this many season-ending injuries," junior DB Cody Riggs said. "But we have a lot of guys that have stepped up so at least we have the depth to make up for it. It's rough seeing guys go down that are good guys that everybody likes on the team."

Florida RB Matt Jones is the latest serious injury. He tore the meniscus in his left knee at LSU. QB Jeff Driskel and DT Dominique Easley are also injured starters.

For Riggs, losing Easley was the toughest - emotionally.

"Definitely Easley, just because I came in with Easley," Riggs said. "We were in the Under Armour game together. We've kind of been together since high school, so that was probably the toughest one for me to take. I was on the field the same time he got hurt and I was just like 'how does that happen'?"

But for linebacker Mike Taylor, it's a risk players are well aware of when they decide to play the game.

“Football is a physical sport," Taylor said. "You know, so as soon as you sign your papers you know what you're getting yourself into. As soon as you sign those waiver fees when you play Pop Warner, you know what you're getting yourself into. Physicality comes with the sport. It's definitely a mentality. You've got some guys out there that want to be vanilla and stuff, but when it comes down to it, everyone's going to have to hit somebody, so.”
