Florida Gators' Jim McElwain a finalist for nation's top coach
A few state college football odds and ends from Wednesday:
Florida coach Jim McElwain is one of six finalists for the Dodd Trophy, given annually to the nation's top coach. The other finalists: Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz, Navy's Ken Niumatalolo, Stanford's David Shaw and Clemson's Dabo Swinney. The award winner will be announced during the week of the Peach Bowl.
The Gators have announced several mid-year enrollees, including Eddy Pineiro, the country's top kicking prospect. It's no secret that kicking has been one of UF's biggest weaknesses this year, and Pinerio, a junior college recruit, will likely compete for the starting job next fall. The other mid-year enrollees announced this week are: QB Feleipe Franks, QB Kyle Trask, RB Mark Thompson, RB McArthur Burnett, and ATH Dre Massey.
Florida DB Vernon Hargreaves and Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey were both named first-team All-Americans by the American Football Coaches Association.
FSU WR Ermon Lane was in a walking boot and on crutches during Wednesday's practice in Tallahassee.
