Kirk Callahan out as Florida Gators' defensive backs coach
Florida defensive backs coach Kirk Callahan will not return next season, the Gators announced Friday afternoon.
Callahan, the son of Armwood High coach Sean Callahan, led a productive secondary but was limited on the recruiting trail. The 30-year-old graduate of Armwood and UCF previously spent three seasons as the Knights' defensive backs coach.
"We are making a change on our staff," UF coach Jim McElwain said in a statement. "Moving forward, Kirk Callahan will be looking at some other opportunities and he has a long career ahead of him."
UF's secondary was one of the best in the country last season. Led by likely first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves and Jalen Tabor, the Gators allowed the 10th-fewest yards per attempt (5.8) and were 11th nationally in opposing passer rating (106.6).
Callahan had one year and $315,000 remaining on his contract.
