Lovie Smith: 'Are you freaking kidding me?'
The honeymoon period with Lovie Smith and Illinois apparently didn't last very long.
The former Bucs head coach is 1-4 with the Illini, who are 0-2 and tied for last in the Big Ten West after last week's loss to Purdue.
Only six teams in the country are committing more penalties per game than Illinois (9.2), which caused a reporter to question whether Smith is being too lax with his team.
Smith did not appreciate the question.
"Ask me that one more time," he said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Are you freaking kidding me? Ask me one more time. You think I've been too lax? Freaking going out there every day and letting them do whatever they want to do? Absolutely not.
"I'm not going to give that question an answer. Lax with the football team? Are you freaking lax with your job? I'm not either."
Smith's Bucs committed 143 penalties last season - tied with the Bills for last in the league.
Two words come to mind on how Smith might describe his return to the college game: Very disappointed.
