Randy Shannon will be Florida Gators' defensive coordinator in Outback Bowl
As expected, Randy Shannon will serve as the Florida Gators' defensive coordinator in the Outback Bowl, coach Jim McElwain told reporters Monday in Gainesville.
Shannon will be the interim replacement for Geoff Collins, who was hired last week as the head coach at Temple.
"Obviously Randy's more than qualified for that position," McElwain said of Shannon, the former Miami head coach.
Shannon, the Gators' associate head coach and linebackers coach, will be considered as a long-term candidate, too. McElwain said UF won't make any decisions on a full-time hire until after the bowl season, including the Gators' Jan. 2 Outback Bowl appearance against Iowa.
"I just don't think it's right this time of year..." McElwain said. "There is no time frame, but obviously we want to have it done before we get back on the road recruiting after the first of the year."
McElwain said UF is looking for some schematic continuity in the hire, but recruiting needs and other factors will also be considered.
With Shannon's change, support staff member Mark DeBastiani will coach the linebackers. DeBastiani, a quality control staff member on defense, has previously served as a defensive coordinator at Norfolk State.
