Unlimited meals and snacks for student-athletes begins today
The NCAA's new rule allowing Division I schools to provide its student-athletes with unlimited meals and snacks in conjunction with their athletics participation officially goes into effect today.
The NCAA Legislative Council approved the rule this past spring. The rule includes scholarship athletes and walk-on players, and was approved in an effort to further meet the nutritional needs of student-athletes.
The extra snacks and meals are in addition to the standard meal plan that is provided as part of a full scholarship. Previously, scholarship student-athletes received three meals a day or a food stipend.
It is unclear how much providing more meals will cost Division I colleges and universities. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said during a June board meeting that the Gators welcomed the opportunity to provide more meals for its student athletes. However, at the time of the budget meeting, Foley said it had not been determined how much more funding would be necessary to implement the new rule, but he said "the dollar amount will not be insignificant."
