When a coaching legend visited Spring Hill
When Christian Pellage began playing football, his family never thought it would experience something like they did over the winter: Steve Spurrier took a recruiting visit to their Hernando County home.
“Having someone like that in your house, it was pretty amazing,” said Christian’s dad, Rick. “To have a legend like that in your house … not many people can say they did that.”
Nor can they say what happened next.
The Pellages took Spurrier and his South Carolina assistants to dinner at the nearby Chefs of Napoli restaurant in Spring Hill. Rick remembers Spurrier as being funny and laid-back during the Italian meal.
During the recruiting process, the Pellages grew comfortable with Spurrier and his wife, Jerri. When Christian — an offensive tackle from Nature Coast Tech — signed with the Gamecocks in February, Spurrier wasn’t the only reason why. But the legendary coach nonetheless influenced the decision.
Now a true freshman, Christian played in each of Spurrier’s final six games and was a key member of what will be his final recruiting class.
“How cool,” Rick said, “is that?
