Why former Bucs assistant Jeff Tedford taking over Fresno State matters to the Florida Gators

Remember Jeff Tedford, the former, sorta Bucs assistant?

Lovie Smith hired him before the 2014 season to be Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator, but he had heart problems in the preseason and never called a meaningful play with the team.

Tedford is back on his feet. Fresno State is hiring him as its next head coach, with an official news conference coming tomorrow.

The move wasn't a shock; Tedford was the likeliest candidate from the beginning. But it does have a ripple effect here in Florida.

Gators offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier's name was mentioned in the search. I still expect Nussmeier to get a head coaching job, sooner rather than later, but today's news officially moves Fresno State off the board.
