Why Notre Dame vacating wins from 2012 could have mattered to Florida Gators

Notre Dame is in trouble with the NCAA after it found a student athletic trainer committed academic misconduct for two football players. As a result, according to the NCAA, one football player participated while ineligible during the 2012 football season, when the Fighting Irish went 12-0 before losing to Alabama in the BCS title game 42-14.

Among the penalties prescribed by the NCAA's panel - vacation of all records during that 2012 season for games in which the player participated.

You can read the full report here. For now, let's look at another wrinkle (pointed out by 247Sports' Thomas Goldkamp).

The Florida Gators could have been playing for a national title. Seriously.

UF team finished No. 3 in the final BCS rankings, behind Notre Dame and ‘Bama. Could Will Muschamp have coached the Gators to a win over the Crimson Tide? Probably not. The Gators lost their bowl game 33-23 to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl.

But perhaps that ‘Bama game wouldn't have been the worst championship showing of the BCS/College Football Playoff era.
