15 Tampa area students get National Merit awards

Fifteen Tampa Bay area high school students have received $2,500 National Merit Scholarships. They were selected from more than 15,000 finalists in the 2013 scholarship program.

The College Board explains that the students "are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors."

The local winners are:

Jade Philipoom, Strawberry Crest High

Risa Brudney, Wharton High

Christina L. Tamargo, Plant High

Brooke H. Wade, home school

Hengyi Wu, King High

Dana C. Lawson, Land O'Lakes High
