Today's news

BLESS YOU: Yesterday the Gradebook told you about the group of teachers at Brooksville Elementary School that anointed children's desks with holy oil before the FCAT writing test began. MORE STAR: While most Florida districts were voting their teacher performance pay plans up or down, Pasco County continued negotiating, making it unclear whether it could meet the March 1 deadline to claim its $3.5-million in bonuses. Miami-Dade teachers, meanwhile, accepted their plan, the Miami Herald reports.

SHE CAN'T HEAR YOU: But that didn't mean Merrie Paul didn't deserve to take a motorcycle safety course in Hillsborough County schools. The school district didn't provide an interpreter, and now it's settled a lawsuit contending that it violated the Americans With Disabilities Act.

NO DEAL: The Pasco County school district's race to build more schools to cope with growth hit a road block when county government officials rejected a location where the district wants to build. The problem: adequate roads around the site. The school district plans to fight.

PLAY FAIR: State Rep. Marcelo Llorente , a former college
baseball player, wants to randomly check high school athletes for
steroid use. He's failed twice but has again filed a bill that would require the testing, the Associated Press reports.

STUDENTS HAVE RIGHTS: And they don't give them up when they enter their schools, the New Jersey Supreme Court unanimously ruled in a case where a gay student alleged discrimination and harassment while in class, the New York Times reports.
