Today's news

'THE BEST TEACHER': Carmela Gallagher, a special education teacher at Seven Oaks Elementary, died suddenly just three days after the last day of classes. Her family, friends, colleagues and students grieve, using the funeral home's web site as an outlet for memories.

HOPING TO BEAT THE ODDS: Here's part two of the Naples Daily News report on the efforts of undocumented immigrant students to gain a college education, despite laws that stand in their way.

Kids
NOT JUST FOR OLD FOLKS ANYMORE:
Northeast Miami-Dade County, once a haven for retirees and snowbirds, is seeing its population of kids boom. So while other parts of the county sees its school enrollment dwindle, places like Sunny Isles Beach and North Miami are building new schools as fast as they can, the Miami Herald reports.

CHEATING AT CHARTERS:
Here's part two of the Dallas Morning News 3-part series on cheating on the Texas annual exam. It focuses on charter schools. At one school, the News analysis discovered just two children whose exam answer sheets did NOT show evidence of cheating.

FORGET ABOUT THE MONEY: All that advertising in public schools - scoreboards, logos and the like - threaten children's well-being, some Massachusetts lawmakers say. So there's a move afoot to ban all advertising and product placement in the state's K-12 system, the AP reports.
