FIU makes cuts. Can you say "ouch"?
FIU trustees have decided on a $32-million budget-cutting plan, in response to lawmakers' reduction in state funding for agencies including universities. Other universities are cutting, too, but FIU's cuts strike the Gradebook as among the most painful.
The plan calls for the closure of more than two dozen academic programs and centers, to take place over the next three years as they are slowly phased out.
FIU Prez Mitch Maidique (left) said he is "heartbroken" at the cuts, which brought some students and faculty to tears at Thursday's meeting.
