CLOSING SHOP: The last day of school really is the very last one for Largo Central and South Ward elementaries and Riviera Middle School, as the Pinellas school district shuts them down amid declining enrollment.
TIME FLIES: It's been more than three decades in the trenches for Lacoochee Elementary reading specialist Polly Jackson, accounts payable specialist Sherrie Case and dozens of other Pasco school employees. But time sure does pass quickly when you're having fun, and now it's retirement time.
GRADUATIONS: Academy at the Lakes in Pasco reaches its 100th alum.
ADDED P.E. REQUIREMENTS: Gov. Crist has signed into law additional mandates on how elementary and middle schools teach physical education, the AP reports.
A LITTLE GRADUATION HELP: The Palm Beach school district seeks to hire a group of counselors whose job would be to guide troubled teens through to a diploma, the Sun-Sentinel reports. Is this really necessary? Well, the district did end up waiving its community-service requirement just so more than 1,000 seniors would qualify for graduation, the Palm Beach Post reports.
SHOULD THEY? OR SHOULDN'T THEY? Lee school officials debate the merits of conducting a local tax referendum to make more money available for general operations, the Naples Daily News reports.

CHESS MASTERS: Never mind that their school scores below the county average in every FCAT category. Or that they live in one of Miami's poorest neighborhoods. The Edison Park Elementary Rooks are awesome at chess, the Miami Herald reports.
MARIACHI MADNESS: A Polk middle school joins the mariachi craze, launching what appears to be the first school-based mariachi band in Florida, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
