63 Florida school districts give early green light to Race to the Top

Despite a wild week, the vast majority of Florida school districts aren't slamming the door on Florida's Race to the Top application. At least not yet. All but four of Florida's 67 districts turned in their letters of intent to participate by today's deadline, prompting this statement tonight from Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith:

"This overwhelming show of support from our school districts for continued collaboration and dialogue exemplifies Florida’s willingness to strive for unprecedented reforms, benefiting our teachers, students, parents and communities.

"I want to praise Florida’s school districts for taking advantage of this exceptional opportunity for educational improvement in our state. Their feedback has been invaluable throughout this process and will allow Florida to create an application that stands out among the competition. I look forward to continued coordination with all of Florida’s education stakeholders as we work together in the best interests of our students.”
