Tampa Bay schools in compliance with class-size amendment ... this year

That's according to the latest calculations, which the Florida Department of Education released just a little bit ago. And that's of course based on school-wide averages, not the classroom-by-classroom caps that must be in place next year. You can see every school in the state here.

Steinbrenner High School in Hillsborough is the only area school not in compliance. But here's why, according to district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. Steinbrenner actually has three classes of eighth graders from Martinez Middle who come over to take Spanish. The DOE has the average class counts for them at 26, but Cobbe said the district has assigned another teaching unit to those classes, which will bring the numbers down. "We're appealing," she said.
