No added fees for Pasco students
The Pasco School Board appears unlikely to mine parents' pocketbooks while seeking ways to offset an expected $28 million shortfall for next year.
The sports-friendly board first put its foot down to prevent elimination of middle school athletics, which had been up for consideration as a $427,000 savings. Now the board is set to establish its student and athletic fees without any increase.
Superintendent Heather Fiorentino is recommending that all fees, from sports participation to locker rental, remain unchanged for another year, despite the district's budget scenario. She and board members have been reluctant to make families pay more in a down economy, as that might dampen students' ability to participate. The board is set to vote on the matter Tuesday.
What do you think it should do? Should students and families pay larger fees to cover the costs of things like athletics? Or are districts right to maintain their current fees?
