Who should vote in school board elections?

A4s_ballotbox011509_52854c We're not going for the "every registered voter" angle here. This is not an ad courtesy of your local supervisor of elections, after all.

Rather, we noted this story from the San Francisco Examiner about a proposal to allow non-citizens who have children in the public school system there to vote. And it raises an interesting philosophical question (not to mention legal ones, too).

The deal is, non-citizen parents often send their kids to the public schools — free of charge, of course — and yet they have no say over who runs the show and sets the policies. In San Fran, the notion is to give these parents a voice with a vote for school board only.

Naturally, the issue of giving only parents the right, and not other non-citizen taxpayers who pay into the system, would play into the debate. So, too, would the matter of whether it's legal or proper to give non-citizens the same right as citizens.

At the core of the discussion, though, seems to be the question of whether all parents should have the opportunity to choose the people who oversee their children's education system. What do you think?
