Having heard Gov. Rick Scott oppose arming teachers in schools, the Florida Education Association is asking him to defund a program that could allow that scenario to take hold."Please veto the funding and language in the budget that provides for arming school personnel," union president Joanne McCall wrote in a letter delivered to Scott's office Thursday morning.McCall stated that her organization supports many pieces of the school safety legislation that passed the Florida House on Wednesday evening. Those include adding entrance security and enhancing mental health services."But the provision that would arm school employees will do more harm than good," she wrote.McCall encouraged the governor to better fund trained law enforcement officers in the schools, instead. Scott has stated in the past that would be his preference. He has yet to weigh in on the legislation.Read the FEA's full letter to Scott here.
