Students to march next week in Ybor

On a day when many students will be walking out of school to call for stricter gun laws, Hillsborough County students say they will march as well – even though the schools will be closed.

Spring break, which is in effect the coming week, coincides with walkouts in other counties, planned for  March 14.

The Hillsborough students will gather at 4 p.m. at Centennial Park on 7th Avenue in Ybor City.  "We're hoping some of the students from Pinellas County will join us too, because it will be after school," said Safiyyah Ameer,  14, of Blake High School.

Safiyyah organized a march from her school on Feb. 23 that culminated in about 500 students and adults gathering at Curtis Hixon Park in downtown Tampa.

"And we had less time to plan," she said. "Hopefully we will have double the amount of students."

Safiyyah said the students are disappointed in the Legislature for approving a gun safety bill that includes the Coach Aaron Feis Guardian program, which allows some school employees to carry firearms.

"No students want any guns, period, on their school campuses," she said. "Our schools shouldn't be prisons."

The students will ask for Gov. Rick Scott to veto the bill, she said, as they continue to call for comprehensive gun laws.
