School board race gets first candidate

Business leader Steve Cona filed Monday to run for Hillsborough County School Board in the District 1 seat that Susan Valdes will vacate to run for the State House.

He is the first to file since Valdes filed her resign-to-run letter on June 8.  Any other candidates have until June 22 to qualify.

"Our public schools should be our biggest economic development engine; a place that cultivates and elevates the uniqueness of every student," Cona said in a news release.

"As a school board member, I will work to ensure our students are prepared to be career and college ready. As a father, I want to ensure we are utilizing all of our current resources to provide the best learning environments for our students."

Cona is the president and CEO of Associated Builders and Contractors Florida Gulf Coast chapter.
