Another delay in Hillsborough school board election
A Hillsborough County elections canvassing board meeting that was scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday has been postponed to 2 p.m. Friday so officials can make sure they have sorted through all of the provisional ballots in the School Board race between Lynn Gray and Cathy James.
"We have to do all of our due diligence," said Gerri Kramer, spokeswoman for the Supervisor of Elections.
In addition to the provisional ballots, there are mail-in ballots that could not be scanned in time for the Tuesday results.
At last count, the difference of 1,205 votes between the two was 0.255 percent of the 472,243 votes cast. Gray was ahead. Statistically, unless James got most of the provisional votes, Gray would stay ahead.
But, even assuming that outcome, the difference might not be great enough to meet the 0.5 percent needed to avoid a recount, under state law.
With those numbers, Kramer said, her staff is making plans for a recount.
Officials had hoped to declare a winner by Tuesday, Nov. 15. They have since extended that timetable to Nov. 17.
The winner is scheduled to be sworn in on Nov. 22. Whoever it is, she will replace longtime member Carol Kurdell.
