Charter school group appeals denial of Pasco County deal
Florida Charter Educational Foundation chairman Rod Jurado pledged "We'll be back" after the Pasco School Board in October denied his group a charter to operate in the county.
He wasn't kidding. The organization, which has close ties to Charter Schools USA, has filed an inches-thick appeal of the denial with the district, board attorney Dennis Alfonso said.
Jurado has contested the district's take on his group's finances, among other concerns district officials raised when recommending rejection of the deal.
To meet legal deadlines, Alfonso would have needed to file a response by Dec. 25. The two sides agreed to an extension, so the full set of arguments pro and con won't be available until some time in January.
Charter Schools USA, one of Florida's largest charter firms, has attempted to gain a foothold in Pasco County for nearly five years to little effect. The same group battled with Hillsborough district officials until recently.
