Charter school group overcomes obstacles to win contract in Pasco County

A charter school firm that has tried to make inroads into Pasco County for five years could soon win a five-year contract to operate in the area.

The School Board is set to consider the agreement for Pasco Charter Academy on Tuesday, seven months after the board denied its latest request for a charter. The group is affiliated with Charter Schools USA, Florida's largest charter operator.

School Board members in the past questioned the participation of Charter Schools USA, suggesting schools run from afar were less likely to succeed than local charters. The board reluctantly approved the deal, but then battled with the organization over terms. After lengthy negotiations, the group won a contract, but then backed out two years later, unable to find a location for its school.

It returned with a revamped proposal for Pasco Charter Academy in 2015. The board denied the request, but later changed its position after the group appealed.
