$120,000 is raised for school supply "store" in Hillsborough
Business types and top school district brass filled tables, wrote checks and raised $120,000 Wednesday for Teaching Tools, a depot that provides free school supplies for low-income schools in Hillsborough County.
That amount included a dollar-for-dollar match from the Leadership Tampa Bay Foundation. The yearly breakfast, hosted by the Hillsborough Education Foundation, attracted 400 guests.
Teaching Tools, now 10 years old, offers monthly shopping trips to teachers at the district's lowest-income schools. The supplies, which are mostly donated from office supply firms and corporations that are re-branding, are free to the teachers. The store is housed in the foundation's west Tampa headquarters.
Foundation president Phil Jones said he hopes to expand the program to include all Title 1, or lower-income schools.
