794 arrests in Pinellas middle, high schools in 2010-11
There were nearly 800 arrests in Pinellas middle and high schools last school year, according to district data requested by The Gradebook. Click on the attachment below to see the school-by-school numbers.
Pinellas Park Middle School - where discipline issues were a big problem last year - led all schools with 59 arrests, followed by Gibbs High (54), Boca Ciega High (48), Azalea Middle (46) and St. Petersburg High (45).
John Hopkins Middle, which recorded more than 100 arrests in 2009-10, had 28 arrests in 2010-11 according to the district and 57 according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The district numbers are different - and smaller - than the numbers reported by St. Pete PD for the other St. Pete schools, too.
We think the difference is that the district numbers only include arrests for on-campus issues, while the PD's numbers include on-campus arrests for off-campus issues. We wanted to touch base with district officials to be sure, but the district is on a four-day-a-week schedule for the summer, so we were out of luck this morning. If we're wrong and/or get a clarification, we'll update the post.
The PD numbers are included in the second attachment below.
