Added charter school construction funding no sure thing
Charter school construction funding tops the agenda in today's Senate Pre-K-12 Education Committee.
The panel will consider a bill that would force Florida's school districts to share their property tax revenue for capital projects with charter schools. It's a proposal that has garnered opposition from parent groups that say the tax dollars should be dedicated to the maintenance and construction of publicly owned and operated schools, and not to benefit the private firms that lease, buy or build charter schools.
At first, the idea had some traction, with an identical proposal put forth in the House. But a House committee stripped the revenue-sharing language from its version of the bill last week, raising doubts about whether the idea can make it through the session. The Florida Association of School Administrators is claiming the House amendment as a victory in its latest legislative update.
If you'd like to catch the Senate committee discussion, it begins at 3 p.m. here. Any thoughts as to whether the senators will stick to the proposal or follow the House?
UPDATE: The Senate committee approved the bill as written, setting up a possible bargaining chip if the bill makes it to conference committee. Story here.
