Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

And the most vegetarian-friendly school district is ...

Hum-platter_0 ... Pasco County, Florida.

That's right.

The solidly suburban, conservative community joins the ranks of Berkeley, Calif., and Cambridge, Mass., on the animal-friendly PETA's list of five school districts that cater to the needs of the herbivores among us.

"Students can enjoy a hummus platter or veggie barbecue rib sandwich here," the group writes of Pasco's lunchrooms. "Well, that is, unless they prefer a veggie burger instead. Yum!"

District officials added more salads and other vegetarian options at the request of students and school employees. Just because they were on the menu didn't mean that kids would eat them. Our recent check of cafeteria sales in Pasco revealed that pizza and nachos remain supreme.
