Are early release days bad for students?

Hillsborough parents fighting the school district's early release day program might look to St. Lucie County for some moral support.

School Board members of that east coast county are publicly pondering a reduction in the days when kids leave early so teachers can collaborate and plan. Their big concern is absenteeism.

As the Port St. Lucie Tribune reports, St. Lucie's attendance rate plummets on early release dates. That flies in the face of district efforts to improve attendance.

"This truly relates back to instructional time," longtime board member John Carvelli said. "You cannot learn if you’re not in school. You got an opportunity here to be creative, but ultimately you need to maximize around 180 days of instruction, full days of instruction versus partial days."
