Board approves renewal of Lastinger contracts

Update: After a hearing from 24 speakers, all but four clearly in favor of continuing contracts with the University of Florida's Lastinger Center for Learning, board members voted 7-0 this morning to approve allocating another $1.6 million to the program.

"I'm excited," superintendent Julie Janssen said. "I was happy that they willing to listen to the teachers...We had to let them hear it first hand."

Check back soon. We'll share more of that details of what went into board members' changes of heart as time permits.

As the last school board meeting before the start of the school year gets started, a district spokeswoman reports lots of people have signed up to speak about Pinellas County's partnership with the University of Florida's Lastinger Center for Learning.

Superintendent Julie Janssen today is asking the board again to vote to approve $1.6 million in contracts for professional development programs with Lastinger, a program that Janssen supports, but which school board members have questioned.

More as it develops.
