BOE member: Start new commissioner search, now

Florida Board of Education member Roberto Martinez asked fellow board members this morning to hold an emergency meeting, as soon as possible, to begin a national search to replace Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith, who announced yesterday he was resigning. Martinez suggested the 7-member board did not need to wait to begin the process until Scott made his three appointments to the board.

Scott's pending appointees should take part in the selection and "we should seek and welcome Governor Scott's input," he writes. "But, this national search to find the right person to fill this important position will, of necessity, take time, thereby affording the three new appointees and the Governor the opportunity to be involved in the ultimate decision. Therefore, it makes sense that we commence the search with all deliberate speed." Read Martinez's full letter below. (You have to click on "comments" first.)
