Buckle Up

Tp_236316_ho_marchetti_2 After a classmate's tragic death, Hillsborough's teen drivers will be asked to sign a pledge to buckle up as they purchase parking decals at the start of the school year.

The Katie Marchetti Cross-Your-Heart Pledge initiative remembers a Durant High junior who died following a car accident in March 2006. Marchetti (left) was a passenger in a car whose driver fell asleep at the wheel. She was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. The driver, who was wearing one, survived unharmed.

Nearly 12,000 high school students who drive to school each day will be encouraged to sign the pledge, vowing that they and their passengers will buckle up. Last year, law enforcement officials conducted unannounced seat belt checks at high schools. They ended up writing 1,043 citations. This year, the district wants to reduce the number to zero.
