Budget-cutting suggestions rolling in to Pinellas
A week after it rolled out this Web site to solicit budget-cutting ideas from the public, the Pinellas school district has received nearly 120 suggestions, which in turn have generated more than 350 comments. (That's through an hour or so ago.)
Among the ideas prompting the most debate: Getting rid of the district's Blackberry devices. Closing all elementary and middle schools for the summer (and concentrating summer services in a few high schools). And putting middle and high school students on the same buses.
The No. 1 comment generator: Not cutting the academic coaching salary supplements for the teachers in the four marquee magnet programs.
If you still want to make a suggestion or comment, you have about 24 hours. The site will be taking input through 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
