Bus driver-turned-politician is fired in Hillsborough
It's official: "Captain Carl" Kosierowski can no longer drive a bus for the Hillsborough County public schools.
He was fired, effective June 18, for handing out campaign literature on the job to support his bid for a school board seat.
Kosierowski is one of five candidates challenging longtime incumbent Carol Kurdell in countywide District 7.
He said he did not know it was against the rules to give a coworker a stack of campaign bookmarks (shown in the attachment). When some of the students saw the bookmarks, they asked for some and Kosierowski complied.
The school district policy manual clearly states that support employees "may not campaign on school property during working hours on behalf of any political issue, or candidate for local, State, or National office."
Kosierowski said it was an honest mistake and the district should have reprimanded him instead.
