Candidate forum Thursday for Pinellas County school board



The Pinellas County Council of PTAs is hosting a public forum Thursday for candidates running for two seats on the Pinellas County school board.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Osceola High School, 9751 98th St. N., Largo. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and all qualified candidates running with opposition have been invited.

Candidates for District 7, a south Pinellas district, include: Glenton Gilzean, who was appointed to the seat by Gov. Rick Scott; Rene Flowers, a former member of the St. Petersburg City Council; Cassandra Jackson, a classroom aide at Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School; Corey Givens Jr., a 2010 graduate of Lakewood High School; and Keisha Bell, a lawyer.

Candidates for District 1, a countywide seat, include: Janet Clark, who is seeking her third term on the board; Elliott Stern, a retired businessman; Shelly Ladd-Gilbert, owner of a pre-school; and Jim Jackson, a retired college professor.

The event has been co-sponsored by the Pinellas Education Foundation, the League of Women Voters, the Times, Channel 10 and PDS-TV 14 Pinellas County Schools Television.
