Education news and notes from Tampa Bay and Florida

Charlie Crist, 'champion of education'

Crist Sure, Gov. Crist may have let the vast majority of about $500 million in education budget cuts move ahead untouched. But his veto of a proposed 20 percent reduction to the bonuses for National Board certified teachers has won him strong praise from, you guessed it, National Board certified teachers.

"Governor Charlie Crist took a courageous stand to support National Board Certification — a proven pay-for performance approach that keeps America's best teachers in the classroom and is a solid investment in the future of our nation's workforce," the group said in a press release.

National Board teachers consistently have decried efforts to slash support for their program, especially as it was done disproportionately to other budget cuts. They said they planned a lobbying effort to show politicians the value of their certification.

Apparently, Gov. Crist listened.
